Your Guide to the Year-Round Weather in New Mexico
Spring | March, April, & May
Spring is one of New Mexico’s best-kept secrets, and the Gila National Forest is the best place to experience it! Warm afternoons present the perfect weather for horseback riding, while chilly nights are ideal for bundling up with family, friends, or loved ones and roasting s’mores around our campfire. Daytime high temperatures range from the 60s (Fahrenheit) in March to the high-70s in May, while nighttime lows range from the low-30s in March to the mid-40s in May
Summer | June, July, & August
If you think New Mexico is all desert, you are not the only one. However, beneath the tall Ponderosa pines, in the cool higher elevations of the Black Range Mountains at 6,500 feet elevation, summertime is one of the best times of year to visit! In June, you will be treated to seeing herds of cow elk with their newborn calves. The “mewing” sound they make to each other is unlike anything you have ever experienced. In July and August, the wildflowers really start to pop with fields of Indian blanket flower, prickly poppy, Rocky Mountain bee plant, and golden crownbeard. In the summertime, we love to play in the warm spring-fed creeks on picnic rides as well as after a day of exploring our trails!
Summer temperatures from June through August are moderate, with average daytime highs in the mid-80s and nighttime lows in the mid-50s. You will also enjoy very low humidity and a wonderful lack of bugs due to the dry climate!
Fall | September, October, & November
The weather remains beautiful here in the fall, and you can look forward to the gentle changing of seasons. In early September, wildflowers still abound. As the fall rut begins, you will hear the unearthly cries of the bull elk bugling. In mid-October, colors begin to change with golden cottonwood trees, bright yellow-orange gambles oak, red sage, and thicket creeper! In September, you can expect daytime high temperatures near 80 and nighttime lows near 45. October offers lovely moderate days typically in the 70s. Temperatures begin cooling in November when you can expect high temperatures averaging in the 60s.
Tips for Your Trip
- Pack layers. Remember that nights are typically much cooler than days.
- Always remember sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. Many of our visitors spend hours in the sun on our riding trails. If you forget, though, complimentary sunscreen is available in your cabin.
- No matter when you visit, unlimited horseback riding is always available. After a few days of riding, particularly if you do not ride horses regularly, your muscles may be a little sore. At the conclusion of your stay, reward yourself with a cleansing and therapeutic trip to the Hot Springs in Truth or Consequences. Riverbend Hot Springs offers guests of Geronimo Trail Guest Ranch a $10 discount off two consecutive soak sessions.
